29/1/2009Merrylee Primary Janitor wins 'Employee of the Year'.
The much loved and respected janitor of Merrylee Primary School, Mr. Ian McAulay, was awarded the recognition of Facilities’ Manager 'Employee of the Year' at the award ceremony for Glasgow City Council Direct and Care staff.
In the school hall with most of the staff and pupils present, Ian was presented with a lovely glass trophy, voucher for dinner for 4 people and a certificate. The children honoured Ian by recalling what makes him so special and different from many other janitors. They told of how he never forgets their birthdays and has the whole school singing ‘happy birthday’ whilst lunch is being served in the hall; he knows everyone in the school inside out and also their parents and even grandparents; he makes them laugh with funny stories, songs and jokes and most importantly- he is a great friend who they can trust.
Ian was recommended by the Head Teacher, Liz Mahindru, for many reasons but primarily for those voiced by the pupils. Not only is Ian appreciated by the pupils but also all the staff, parents and wider community. In her recommendation she stated that Ian was a very important figure within the whole community and is integral to ensuring the caring, happy environment in which pupils learn, staff work and others visit.
The whole school are delighted he has been honoured in this way.
